The Magazine Reflection!

This project has been a great project for me to work on my writing skills. Drafting and revision have helped me the most through out this project. I know I probably sound repetitive because I say that so much but I feel that has helped me so much. Each draft I made improved from the previous one. My structure in writing has also noticeably improved from this project. Normally work would be thrown around in different paragraphs but I think this article came out very structured. When I put my writing into Indesign and started working on the layout, I was exactly sure how I wanted it. With the help of Randy and my classmates it came out just how I hoped. I used my photography from my photo essay in my article, I think it looks very nice. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to write about but I knew I had to make something new instead of using my photo essay. I chose to write about what it is like preparing for internship and how much it teaches the students. The process of printing the magazine is long. The proofs came back about 3 times and each time there were more mistakes to be found. I never knew what a long process it would be, but its really cool learning what goes on in the process of making a magazine.

I think that the overall experience of internship was amazing. I don't know anyone else that gets the experience in high school. Even if my internship wasn't as enjoyable as I thought, the learning process was great. I really think that this will help me in future jobs and work experiences. I think parts of this magazine will show what our economy is going through, and I'm not positive if it tells it in the magazine but the people who got laid of their internship should share with our audience at exhibition to show what the economy has done even to non paid interns.

What did you learn?
What I learned most would be the long process of writing, drafting, revision and the actual process of making a magazine.
How did you learn in?
I leaned this my going through the actual project and doing so much hands on work to complete this amazing project.
Why is this important?
This is important because everything that we learned is going to be used in the real world, no matter what you will always use writing in the future. Also the experience of making an actual magazine is going to look good on any job and for college as well.

Magazine Reflection Take Two!

1. Overall, when you think about the big picture of your writing, what improved? How did it get better? Why?
Looking at my writing from the first draft and looking at my final draft, it improved drastically. Going through each critique, my structure became so much better. I had no structure in the first draft and everything was just thrown around, each time we had a critique I would get suggestions and go back and fix them. An example of this was that my writing was scattered in all different paragraphs when I could have had the sentences organized together. This improved my writing completely.

2. Overall, when you think about the big picture of your writing, what still needs work? What do you think will help you improve? Why?
I think my introduction on my article could be stronger. I think one last critique by Randy or a student could help me make my intro as strong as it can be. I feel that critiques help me the most out of anything.

3. Specifically, show us something that improved and describe the path it took to get better. You can quote your article, your drafts, link to evidence, etc.
My biggest improvement would be my conclusion
draft:

"The students around High Tech High Media Arts (HTHMA) have been asked if they had enjoyed internship, a good majority of them simply said “no”, But when asked if they gained anything from their internship experience, many said how much they had learned. The internship experience may not always be fun and enjoyable, but at the end of the day what has been gained from the experience is a whole new world of knowledge. Internship does not only prepare students for the "real world" it gives them a chance to experience a field of business that could be considered for a future career or could be decided as a no for a future career."

final:

"Even though not all students have enjoyed internship, they say they have gained a tremendous amount from the experience. The internship experience may not always be fun and enjoyable, but at the end of the day what has been gained from the experience is a whole new world of knowledge. Internship does not only prepare students for the "real world", it gives them a chance to experience a field of business that could be considered for a future career or could be decided as a no for a future career."

4. Describe something specific (or a few things!) that you learned about writing.
The thing that I learned most about writing would probably be that drafting and revision helps me more than anything. At the end of the project, after I had turned my final draft in, I went and got all my drafts and looked through them. I probably had about 15 drafts and each one was so much better as they went along.

Internship Photo Essay!

Dove Apparel isn’t your average work place. The company is a nursing scrubs retailer; their main stream of business is selling their uniforms to schools such as SDSU for nursing students. About 10 people work in the office daily, making it a fun and relaxed environment in which everybody knows each other. It’s not exactly what you picture when you think of a 9 to 4 job. When I first started this internship I was told I was going to be making a fitting guide video for nursing scrubs. This video would be placed on the Dove website, so that customers can now see the proper way to measure and the company will also not get so many returns because of improper measurements.

Day one of immersion starts, I was kind of nervous to start filming considering I’m not that great with editing videos. We defiantly thought that we were prepared for the filming but it didn’t seem to be turning out so well. We decided to meet at HTHMA. We reserved the conference room because we thought it would be cool to have our own space to film. We realized that we didn’t have any models that day to do the measuring, so of course my mentor Lindy had Amanda and I be the actors. We played back the video when we were done filming and the lighting was not good. We decided we needed to relocate.

Dance Place San Diego was our next destination for the filming, so we used my mom’s ballet studio as a recording spot, the lighting got better so we decided to try re-fliming, this time we used Lindys husband Mike for our model. He did very well. We went back to watch our video and again the lighting was terrible. Lindy, Amanda and I were stuck and had know more ideas for shooting. Then we all realized there was the perfect filming site, and that was right at our internship.

All of us defiantly didn’t even think about the one small room in Dove that has all the equipment needed for a video; it has proper lighting, reflectors, a video camera, and a blank white back drop. It was perfect. We started the filming using many different variations of lighting. We tried the blinds open, blinds closed, being closer, than farther away from the light. Also, a big difference was the color of the clothes we wore. We ended up getting the perfect lighting and came out with a great video.

At the end of immersion, I realized how extremely beneficial it was to have this time to film our video. At the beginning of internship I thought this video would be finished so fast, but it is a lot harder than I would have ever thought. Even though some days went by slow, it was worth it. I have learned what it is like to be working in the real world and I think every high school student should be able to do this. I have gained so much experience, not only making films, but with retail, clothing and what it is like to be at a 9 to 4 job.

What are you bringing to the Magazine?!

1. What article(s) would you like to write for the magazine? What photography could you contribute? Art? List three different ideas for your major contribution.

I think I would like to write an article about how students benefit from having an internship and why it is such a great experience to have. It would also be cool to involve photography with the article as well, but I'm not sure exactly how I plan to do that yet.

2. Suggest at least one (or more) possible title for the magazine. This could be a title with or without a subtitle. For example, I work for UnBoxed: a Journal of Adult Learning in Schools.

High School students of the real world

3. Suggest a topic for an article that you were personally like to read in a magazine inspired by the internship semester.

I would like to read an article of a students actual experience of their own internship, and how it helped them with learning and even getting a better idea of what they want to do for a career.

Immersion!

As you prepare for your internship immersion, please answer the following questions:

1. What are you most excited about in regards to your immersion experience? Why do you feel this way?
I am really excited to benefit the organization I am interning for by making a video for promotional reasons. I feel this way because the video we are making is going to help make more profit for the organization.

2. What are you most concerned about (what causes the most stress) regarding immersion? Why do you feel this way?
I am most stressed about not being able to find a high enough quality camera to do the filming. I feel this way because if we don't get a good enough camera our whole project isn't going to go as well as planned.

Please answer each in as much depth as you can--I am so very interested in learning about how you'll be doing out in the "real world"!

Outstanding Blogz

What blogs are out there with outstanding examples of:

1. Economic advice to Barack Obama?
http://chandlermhood.blogspot.com/
I picked Chandlers blog because he had very specific statistics that made the blog clear and straight to the point. He also used many quotes that related to his advice. "America's unemployment rate has rose from 7.2% to 7.6%, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistic's, January 2009 Employment Situation Summary."

2. Literary Analysis?
http://sydneyhumanities.blogspot.com/
The main symbol used through out the novel is the reference to the green light. The green light represents Gatsby's hopes and dreams for the future. Gatsby reaches towards his goal with a guiding light. Gatsby's quest for daisy is similar to the American Dream, the ideal situation. "I realized by some unmistakable sign that an intimate revelation was quivering on the horizon," the green light.

This is a paragraph from Sydney's blog. She is very specific and detailed when witting about the literary devices. She uses quotes from the book to show exact examp0les of literary devices.

3. Historical Writing?
http://dianabarlow10.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2009-01-30T11%3A32%3A00-08%3A00&max-results=7
I used Diana's blog from historical writing. The blog that I thought was very good was the "Kennedy and Obama's Connection" blog. She uses a lot of information that is very detailed and she doesn't ramble off to different subjects. She compares Kennedy and Obama's inauguration speech, "John F. Kennedy’s inauguration speech is relevant in modern society because it was abundant with hope, motivation, and change, which continue to inspire even today's generations."

4. Anything else that makes blogs great?
I think what makes a blog GREAT is the effort that the blogger puts into their blog. You can tell who trys and doesn't try. The ones that have images are so much more interesting than the bland ones that are just full of text. Also blogs that have evidence make it a lot more interesting to read because your hearing it straight from the source to make it factual.
