Lincoln vs. McCain, Now & Then

Lincoln vs. McCain, Now & Then

Although McCain and Lincoln are so far apart in history, they still have something’s in common as well as some differences. As we know Lincoln was our president of 1890, over 100 years ago. Now John McCain, a presidential candidate, things have changed. Both men being Republicans and both have experienced war either in presidential lead or while being a candidate. One year after Lincoln was elected president the Civil War began. Over 75,000 troops were sent to "preserve the Union."1

What does Lincoln say?

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and also known as a man against slavery, said "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." I think this statement is very true because every president one time or another is going to say what the people want, but not ending up performing that action. Also every since Lincoln was around his mid 20’s he had always been against slavery. After a lot of work on slavery he finally freed all those states that rebelled against it.2

What does McCain say?

As it says on John McCain’s web site “Human Dignity and the Sanctity of Life,” is he really living up to these words. In class over the past 6 weeks we have been talking a lot about Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness and being born to our natural rights. As Lincoln put a stop to the majority of slavery, that gave many people there rights back as they should have been born with, now McCain is putting a stop to our rights. It states on his web site3 that “John McCain believes the institution of marriage is a union between one man and one woman.” He is stating that if someone of the same sex wants to get married they can not because that isn’t “traditional” and its not what he believes. If this is so, then the couple would not have the right to get married and this means that they were not given their natural rights.

Today’s politics compared to the past are so much different. Although Lincoln and McCain are both Republicans they show differences in the way they want to lead, and shows that the issues today still relate to the ones in the past and revolve a lot around Natural rights and also the Pursuit of Happiness.
